A few weeks ago I was watching one of my favorite movies, City Slickers. I guess it’s now an “oldie”, but a really fun movie to watch with the family over the holidays!
I love the scene where Billy Crystal's character, Mitch, is alone with Curly, played by Jack Palance. Curly is giving Mitch some life advice.
Curly: Do you know what the secret of life is? (He holds up one finger.) This.
Mitch: Your finger?
Curly: One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and the rest don't mean s***.
Mitch: But, what is the "one thing?"
Curly: That's what you have to find out.
So what is your “One Thing”?
What brings you joy? A sense of pride? Satisfaction that comes from deep within? Make a list. These questions might help:
What activities did you enjoy as a child that you have left behind? Do you miss this them?
What do you wish you had more time to do?
What have you always wanted to try, “someday”?
Is there a trip or experience you’ve had on your bucket list for some time?
Once you have a list, narrow it down to the “One Thing” that you want to do in 2019. What is the “One Thing” you would do if you only you had the time…?
Now, go do it. Rearrange your schedule. Make the extra effort. Say the “One Thing” out loud. Tell others to make yourself accountable. Put it on a post it on your computer.
My “One Thing”… I will train for a Triathlon. No, I’m not kidding!
My quest for Tri training began at a wine tasting at my friend Elyse’s house. After a few samples of wine, I met Libby Hurley who runs Together We Tri: http://www.togetherwetri.com. Together We Tri offers experienced coaching for beginners (me) all the way to competitive athletes. I will start the training shortly. Want to join me?
I hope you find your “One Thing” and truly enjoy it. Thank you for reading my blog this year! All the best for a happy and healthy New Year!
